Following his eagerly awaited transfer to Spanish superpower Real Madrid, French soccer player Kylian Mbappe is expected to get a signing-on bonus of at least £85 million, or $108.4 million, spread over the following five years.
In a brief statement issued on Monday, Real Madrid said that a deal had been made for Mbappe to play for the team throughout the following five seasons. The release withheld all financial information.
When his contract with Paris Saint-Germain ends at the end of June, the 25-year-old World Cup champion is likely to formally join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Over the deal’s financial terms, media reports were at odds.
Real Madrid is likely to pay Mbappe’s signing bonus of just over £85 million in installments throughout his five-year deal, according to a Monday report by Sky Sports.
The athlete would retain a portion of his image rights and get a 150 million euro, or $162.9 million, signing-on incentive that would be paid over the following five years, 15 million euros per season, according to a separate BBC report.
Neither story was independently confirmed by CNBC.
CNBC’s request for comment was not answered right away by a Real Madrid spokesman. Mbappe has been contacted by CNBC as well.
Long a top target of Real Madrid, Mbappe said on social media that joining the team was “a dream come true.”
“So happy and proud to join the club of my dream @realmadrid,” Mbappe said on Monday on the social networking site X. I am so thrilled right now that nobody can really comprehend.
Photos of a young Mbappe visiting Real Madrid while sporting a Real Madrid jacket accompanied the post, which was written in Spanish, English, and French. Mbappe was seen in one of the pictures with five-time Ballon d’Or winner and former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Not long after Real Madrid secured their record-breaking 15th Champions League final victory, word of Mbappe’s transfer to the Spanish team was confirmed.
Last season, Mbappe led Paris Saint-Germain to their thirteenth Ligue 1 championship with 44 goals. For the last six years, the striker has led all scorers in the French premier division.
